Platypus Platy Bottle

Platypus
I bought the 2L version, to carry extra water in when I go through dry areas or cross a ridgeline w/ less water access. The Platy bottle works great for storage, the cap is nice and secure. In camp, it stands up by itself, so I can use it for cooking or keeping water nearby for midnight thirst. It doesn't leave any taste in the water.

excellent product
These platy bottles are excellent. One of those rare AWESOME additions to the backcountry arsenal. I wouldn't have tried a "Folding" bottle unless a friend had used them a lot and loved them. They are counter intuitive - it seems like they'd crack or wear, folding and scrunching them. Not so. They weigh 1/8th of a nalgene liter bottle, for the same volume. Excellent way to have extra capacity on a hike or backcountry trip. I use an MSR water filter, so I carry only one nalgene to pump into (the pump fits on that size mouth), then empty a bottle at a time into the Platypus. When they're empty, I roll them up and they take up less space than a cany bar. In very cold temps (single digits), the small opening may freeze and fill with ice, but this is easy to deal with compared to other bottles - the lid material is thin but durable, and if you hold it in your hand a few seconds, it will release, and you can get the lid off. Just dip the opening, now, in hot water (while cooking) and the ice "plug" releases. Excellent product.

Ultralight, Although Minimalist
Amazingly light - when empty, like it's not even there. Can also hook up a Platypus drinking tube to make it into a hydration system. A few drawbacks from the minimalist design: -- Have to be very careful filling it up, given how small the opening is. -- The design allows it to be freestanding, although it can tip over, so don't leave it standing up on its own if the cap is not on. -- Drying out the inside in between trips takes some times.

Great addition to your backpacking gear
I've always been a fan of the camelback bladders- but now am also a fan of the Platapus bladder- not interchangibly, but as an addition to your backpacking gear. I love that it's lightweight, leakproof, rolls up tiny when it's empty, and the size of the opening make it easy to pour into other containers or drink from directly (can we say, easy mixed drinks on your outing?) Enough said.

Platypus is the best
In my opinion, Platypus water bottles and hydration systems are the best, hands down. I use a 6L tank for camp water storage, 1L bottles for Gatorade, and all my backpacking companions and I use 1.8L hosers while hiking. Platypus products are lightweight, durable, not bulky, and inexpensive. I have had only one failure in ten years of using their products, which was my fault. Don't even think of buying other products, you'll be sorry.
